He also had a successful parallel career as the writer of macabre adult short stories, usually with a dark sense of humour and a surprise ending. Dahl went on to create some of the best-loved children's stories of the 20th century, such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda and James and the Giant Peach. The book was commissioned by Walt Disney for a film that was never made, and published in 1943. His first children's book was The Gremlins, about mischievous little creatures that were part of RAF folklore. Though Mai's three adult daughters, Priscilla, Thuy, and Thao, are successful in their careers ( one of them is John Cho's dermatologist!), the same can't be said for their love lives. She's divorced, and after an explosive disagreement a decade ago, she's estranged from her younger sisters, Minh Pham (the middle and the mediator) and Khuyen Lam (the youngest who swears she just runs humble coffee shops and nail salons, not Little Saigon's underground). Oanh's current descendant Mai Nguyen knows this curse well. The toxin quickly breaks tissues down into a liquid that they can more easily ingest. Triffids hunt by launching an extremely toxic barb from their stalks. The titular triffids are large, sapient, carnivorous plants capable of independent, albeit slow, movement they are also capable of communicating with each other and thus are able to launch coordinated attacks upon the helpless human population after they were blinded by the green meteor shower.
