I felt compelled to keep reading even though there’s not a lot that initially happens compared to some books I’m used to. I’m not a big reader of romance novels but this one is just so heartwarming. I’m surprised by how much I enjoyed reading this. The rest of the book is a combination of both Lina’s story and her mother’s journal entries, which act like a second story. The tale quickly moves forward when Lina finds out about her mother’s journal, the one she kept when she had been in Florence herself, before Lina was born. The story is told in the first person and after a brief prologue where Lina’s mother explains her wish to her, the story begins with Lina arriving in Florence and getting to know her new surroundings. Lina’s mother tells her she wants her to move to Florence to be with her father, Howard, but Lina doesn’t know Howard, her mother never even mentioned him until now. Review: I can’t believe how much I enjoyed this book! ‘Love & Gelato’ is a YA romance/contemporary novel with a feel-good story. *Free copy provided by publisher for review… People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more. With the help of her mother’s journal, Lina uncovers a magical world of secret romance, art and hidden bakeries. Then I realized, the book was over and things just wrapped up. What sucks is that not all the plot points were concluded, whether it be the dairies, Ryan, Mindy, Chad. He seemed all right, but then things with him got real shady and made no sense. I seem to be talking about a lot about Hubert even though it wasn't his book. Suddenly that was dropped and some weird love triangle/fawning happens when the book was half way over. So the 1st part of the book dealt with him and how he was so distraught with his ex. I think I would have liked it if he was gay less chance of a romantic angle with him. To me he was annoying and he seemed kind of gay. I guess it was because he cleaned, cooked, and knew everyone's name. He was a mess after a bad breakup and he seemed to be a bit of a freeloader and kind of creepy in a stalker way. A huge chunk of the book involved him and I didn't like him. My biggest problem was the friend, Hubert. Basically, I liked the main character, but Lola was the only thing I liked. Sure, I'm a guy who doesn't have a job he likes, a house, or a couple of women fawning over him, but everything else I can relate to. I'm 29 and I'm single and I'm a bit of a loner. “The tether contorted and quivered and groaned in protest.” When Donya makes a hard decision for both of them, the tether between them stretches beyond what seems possible.
